There were 219 new insider trades filed. We looked through them all to find the best ones.

• Insiders continue buying the dip at Marriott Vacations (VAC)

• NPEH, LLC continues to sell NetPower (NPWR)

• The CEO at Cassava Sciences (SAVA) appears to be continuously trying to pump the stock with his buys

• Insiders at Fossil Group (FSSL)

• The CFO and CEO at Valvoline (VVV) both bought the stock after its 20% dip in the last 3 months

• Fossil Group (FOSL) is up almost 100% in the last year, but 4 insiders have bought in the last week

• Lots of insider buying going on at Avidia Bancorp (AVBC)

• CFO at Tapestry (TPR) sells $2M

• CFO at Valero Energy (VLO) sells the stock for the first time ($1.73M)

Commentary

One of the highest signal insider purchase types is dip buys. In yesterday’s email, I shared some academic research papers that found that insiders are value investors who tend to buy their company when they believe it is undervalued and the stock price has fallen, and that these dip buys outperform.

Our CEO Watcher database has all insider trades back to 2009, and I ran some analysis on it to see how dip buys have performed.

Like the academic research I shared, we find that insider dip buys outperform the S&P across all timeframes (next 1M/3M/6M/1Y) with improving performance as the dip size increases.

Much of the academic research on insider purchasing finds that the outperformance is mostly in small-cap stocks and that insider purchases at large-cap companies don’t outperform (they perform in line).

However, for the insider dip buys in our database, we find that the outperformance exists in both large and small-cap companies (<$2B mkt cap is small cap, >=$2B is large cap).

We also find that insider dip buys outperform on longer timeframes, too (1Y dip buy results in the photo below).

And it’s even better if the stock is down significantly in both the previous 1M and 1Y.
