A new dataset we have created is the companies with the most bullish insider trading. We filter out all of the low signal buys/sells and then rank the companies by how bullish the insider trading is.

There is plenty of academic research on group insider buying outperformance (link, link), and we’ve also found group buying outperformance in our own dataset (back to 2009).

Three general notes about insider buying (that are all related):

1. Insiders have a longer time horizon than most investors

2. Insiders are often early

3. Insider signal is much longer-term than you probably think (up to 2 years, though we typically cut it off at 12 months as the signal starts to deteriorate)

These actually apply to insider selling as well (especially #2), so it’s helpful to keep in mind that you don’t always need to immediately copy insider trades, and you can wait until you’ve done more research and/or the price action becomes more favorable.
